How to properly care for wooden wicks
Your candles come with wooden wicks. These are a little different from a the traditional cotton wicks that you are used to seeing. They burn longer, cleaner, and have a nice cozy crackling sound. They do require a bit of extra care.
A wooden wick can take a bit more heat to properly light. Keep your lighter against the wooden wick 20-30 seconds. Hold it there longer than you think you need to. Sometimes a wooden wick will not stay lit and it may take some patience but it is worth it.
Trim your wick before each use, removing all charred and split wood from your previous burn. It should be sticking out of the wax about 1/4”. If you don’t trim it, the wick may not stay lit long enough to fuel the flame. If you don’t have a wick trimmer, we suggest using toe nail clippers. They are straighter than regular nail clippers, can reach down into the candle vessel and they work well to trim and remove all charred wood.
Allow the wax to melt across the entire diameter of your candle on the first burn. This will help prevent tunneling, which will impact how well the candle burns. The standard rule is approximately one hour per inch of diameter of your candle.
No matter what kind of wick you have, don’t burn candles for longer than 4 hours.
